CALPIU '08 conference proceedings - call for abstracts

Following CALPIU’s first major conference, CALPIU '08, the conference organizers are currently planning a publication which will reflect some of the themes covered at the conference.

The themes discussed at the conference included:
  • linguistic and cultural accommodation and learning processes across the many national and ethnic barriers inherent in the international university, and across the different types of international university.
  • the development of productive and receptive multilingualism and language alternation in interaction – 'how the international university is talked into being'.
  • the consequences of the huge increase in the use of English as a lingua franca (or 'ELF') by university teachers and students. One question that came up was whether the gatekeepers of the internationalized university would understand a shift from EFL (English as a Foreign Language) to ELF (English as a lingua franca) – a shift from a focus on existing, received models to a focus on linguistic resourcefulness.
  • the consequences of the huge increase in the learning and use of other languages besides English
  • accompanying issues of differences in pragmatic practices and socio-cultural assumptions.
Before the conference we were approached by two major publishers with proposals regarding the possible publication of manuscripts based on conference talks, e.g. in the form of a special journal issue or an anthology. We therefore urge the speakers of the conference to submit a revised abstract of their paper with a view to contributing – upon acceptance of this abstract – an article for a book or special journal issue based on aspects of our proceedings. To provide coherence to such a volume, the local editors (the conference committee) would like for manuscripts to relate directly or indirectly to one or more of the CALPIU Center’s four Fields of Practice, which are:
  • Field of Practice 1: The practice and self-conception of the university as an institution and “actor” in a multilingual world
  • Field of Practice 2: Teacher-student relations
  • Field of Practice 3: Student-student relations
  • Field of Practice 4:  Student-administrative staff interaction
Calpiu members who did not participate in the conference are also welcome to submit an abstract if it is relevant to the proposed volume according to the above specifications.

Deadline:
Abstract (100-400 words): April 1, 2009
Full manuscript for peer reviewing: August 1, 2009 – style specifications to appear later – but remember: When writing the final manuscript, please turn off all automatic formatting, including auto-numbering of sections.

Please email your abstract to calpiu@ruc.dk
