Li presented an informal progress report from a research project on learning the local language as part of internationalization (Cantonese and putonghua in Hong Kong) and The new language policy at HKIEd. As part of the CALPIU network and research center, David C.S. Li has studied the degree to which students and academics from the mainland of China learn Cantonese when staying in Hong Kong, and the degree to which foreign students and academics from outside China have learnt either Cantonese or Standard Mandarin (putonghua). He gave a report about the latest results from his research. As an introduction, David Li talked briefly about the new language policy being implemented at Hong Kong Institute of Education.
